The Species at Risk Act is a federal-level piece of legislation with the purpose of preventing wildlife species from becoming extinct, and to help the recovery of endangered or threatened species.

To determine a Species at Ris k, an evaluation process is undertaken which includes data collected from local communities, traditional land users, and information from a committee of experts.

The Northwest Territories Species at Risk Secretariat is a component of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, and includes a Species at Risk Committee and a Conference of Management Authorities. ADK First Nation is an observing participant in the Conference of Management Authorities, and remains committed to proper stewardship of species at risk in the region.
