Following Devolution in April, 2014, the Northwest Territories Land Act gave the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) authority related to the disposition and use of land, including subsurface minerals.

This legislature joins the Waters Act and the Mackenzie Value Resource Management Act in an integrated regulatory system for land and water resource management. The complete Lands Act can be viewed here.

As Acho Dene Koe First Nation is currently negotiating a modern treaty, lands selected during this process will be governed by ADK once the process is complete. Under the Framework Agreement, Acho Dene Koe is expected to receive 6,474 sq. kilometers of treaty Settlement Lands. Acho Dene Koe will hold title to both the surface and sub-surface of these lands, once selected.
